The other day I was only twelve feet away (separated from the outside by a glass door) from a robin’s nest and was able to watch the adult robins feed their chicks. It was unusual to be able to be so close and watch the adults bring worms and other food to their chick in the nest. I was enchanted seeing the chick tilt its beak open wide for food as each adult brought it food. Then I was amazed to see how both adults fit in the nest, as they joined their chick. How often do we slow down to notice the sights and sounds around us? I’ve been amazed how quiet a classroom of fifteen kindergartners can be when listening for the bird songs and sounds and connect them with the ones they learned. How might you help a young child or a group of young children slow down to listen and look at what is around them?
